Composition Winners to perform Sunday
Tom Larson, Assistant Professor of Composition (Emerging Media and Digital Arts) at the UNL Glenn Korff School of Music has served as this year’s composition contest judge. He will also be featured in a special performance at the recital.
Student winners of the 2021 Biennial Lincoln Music Teachers Association (LMTA) Composition Contest will perform their compositions in an in-person recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 21, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2225 Washington Street. Tom Larson, Assistant Professor of Composition (Emerging Media and Digital Arts) at the UNL Glenn Korff School of Music has served as this year’s composition contest judge. He will also be featured in a special performance at the recital. Composition Contest Committee members consist of Marcia Wiebers, Jane Sonneland and Marina Fabrikant. The recital is free and open to the public. Masks will be required and social distancing will be observed.
Winners will receive a monetary gift and all students will have their compositions included in a publication available for purchase by the public. LMTA feels that composition develops students’ creativity and musical expressiveness while they incorporate various musical techniques, use of instruments, and decide on the names of their compositions. The LMTA Composition Contest began in 2005-06 with Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra support for the cause, and the event this spring is the 9th to be held.
LMTA is an association of 65 music teachers and is open to teachers from all disciplines. Founded in 1942, LMTA’s mission is to provide quality music instruction, continuing education and mutual support among members and their students, and community outreach for the promotion of the arts.
LMTA meets monthly from September through May with a continuing education component at each meeting. In addition to monthly meetings, the volunteer LMTA Board sponsors at least one major workshop for member teachers and a major activity for the members’ students each year. Categories of membership include Supporting, LMTA Professional, Collegiate Faculty, Collegiate Student and Retired.
